KOCHI – THE QUEEN OF ARABIAN SEA
Kerala's most visited tourist destination, Kochi, has one of the finest natural harbours in India around which is based an ancient history of maritime trade. The cosmopolitan city is fascinating in many ways - the beautiful sea front with Chinese fishing nets and stalls selling seafood; the traditional Fort Kochi area with its mix of Dutch, British, Muslim and Portuguese architecture; and the older city of Ernakulam.
Jewish Synagogue : The prosperous Jewish trading community built the Jewish Synagogue in 1568 whose links with Kerala begin in Kodungallor (Cranganore) in the north of the state. The oldest synagogue in India, it was partially destroyed in the war of 1662 and was rebuilt by the Dutch.
Chinese Fishing Nets : The nomenclature of Chinese fishing nets suggests that it has its origin in China. It was introduced by the Chinese explorer Zheng He. The Chinese fishing nets in Cochin Harbor were set up between 1350 to 1450. The beaches of Cochin are beautifully lined with these Chinese nets. Chinese fishing nets abound in the Vasco-da-Gama Square near the Fort Kochi. They can also be seen in and around Bastion Bungalow, Santa Cruz Basilica and VOC Gate.
Chinese fishing nets in Cochin are locally known as Cheenavala. In Cochin, the Chinese nets are suspended in the mid air all along the coast.
Mattancheri Palace : Mattanchery Palace is a beautiful palace built by the Portuguese. Now this is known as Dutch Palace. Wall Paintings of the 17th century is a speciality here. An art gallery is also found here. The real glory of the palace however lies in its wall murals, all done using the tempera process of painting. Forty-five scenes from the Ramayana adorn the long walls of the bedchamber. The palace is one of the oldest buildings of the Portuguese and is in oriental style
