Kovalam

Today Kovalam has become one of the most popular beach hangouts in India. Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees and truly the coconut trees along the beaches gives it a ravishinglook. The palm-fringed bays in secluded coconut groves, promise a relaxed stay. The boundless blue waters of the Arabian Sea and miles of white sands washed away by the surf at the feet of the stalwart palms and the rocky promontories, makes this beach paradise. This marvellous beach is a tourist's dream come true.

Places of attraction in and near Kovalam

The-Lighthouse
The lighthouse is located on the southern end of the beach that named after it, on a hillock namely Kurumkal. The 35 meter tall lighthouse is painted with red and white, makes it highly attractive even from a very long distance. The lighthouse is opened to visitors. The lighthouse offers spectacular views of the beach and the neighboring Eve's beach and surroundings. The lighthouse road is a main venue for cycling and evening walks.

KaramanaRiver-Boating
The Karamana River crosses the highway at Thiruvallam, 12 kilometers from Kovalam on the Kovalam-Trivandrum route. The place offers delightful views of the backwater, splendid with greenery.  The place is filled with lush green nature. The Thiruvallam boat club, located on the banks of the river offers a variety of cruises from canoe rides, kayaking to houseboat cruises. Backwater cruises to the nearby islands Pozhikkara and Edayar are the main things to do here. The boat club offers home stays too.

Vellayani-Lake
It is one of the few freshwater lakes in Kerala. Viewing this pristine water body on moonlight is an enchanting one. The lake offers boating. The Vellayani Lake is the venue for the annual boat race happens here during the period of Onam. This water festival attracts a lot of people. The Vellayani Durga Temple is located near to the lake. Unlike most of the other lakes in Kerala, this temple allows only non-Brahmin as priests.

The Kovalam Art Gallery is located in the town, which displays certain artifacts, paintings and other art works. This place is an important visiting place.

Thiruvallam-ParashuramaTemple
The Parashurama Temple is located 12 kilometers from Kovalam and is one of the important Hindu religious shrines in this region. This 2000-year-old temple is located on the banks of the Karamana River and is perhaps the only temple in Kerala dedicated to Parashurama. Its a famous spot for 'Balitharpanam' ceremony (annual offering to dead).

Vizhinjam-RockCutCave-Temple
Vizhinjam Rock Cut Caves contains the rock cut sculptures belonging to the 18th century in the cave temple. The temple is dedicated to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi and can see a loose sculpture of this deity in a granite cave. There are also sculptures related to Lord Siva and Parvathy, which remain unfinished. It is about a few kilometers from Kovalam. The cave was unknown for a long time. Pallava mode of architecture can be seen in the temple.

Aruvikkara-Dam
Aruvikkara dam is another beautiful picnic spot lies on the shores of Karamana River. The dam lies around 10 kilometers from Kovalam. The dam and a waterfall, a Durga temple, a fish tank associated with the temple are the main attractions here. The Head Quarters of the Wellington Water Distribution project is located here. Aruvikkara dam provides water to the capital city. The place is easily accessible by road.

Kanyakumari-(CapeComorin)
Situated 87 km away from Thiruvananthapuram, the place Kanyakumari is located at the southernmost tip of India where the three water bodies, Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. From here, one can see the sun rise from the Bay of Bengal and set in the Arabian Sea. It is a holy place for Hindus because of the Kanyakumari Temple. The Gandhi Smarak Mandir and Vivekananda Rock Memorial are additional tourist attractions. Wandering in the beach is the main thing to do here. Boat ride from the beach to the nearby Vivekananda Rock is available. In fact the beautiful place Kanyakumari is located at Tamil Nadu. This place is a must visitone.

Varkala-Papanasham-Beach
Another calm and peaceful beach resort Varkala is located at a small distance from Kovalam. The beach and the Sivagiri monastery are the important attractions here. This place is one of the important Hindu pilgrimage centers. The 2000-year-old Janardhana Temple is located here at Varkala.
